After Alexander: New Perspectives on Classical and Late Antique Pella in Jordan

October 06, 2018 @ 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Speaker: Dr Stephen Bourke

Academy Travel continue to be proud sponsors of the Nicholson Museum’s 2018 Saturday series, Postcards from the Past.

Dr Stephen Bourke will be speaking on, “After Alexander: New Perspectives on Classical and Late Antique Pella in Jordan” .

The Macedonian conquest of the Middle East was a key moment in the history of the Middle East, ushering in an age of profound change to cultural, economic and political norms. The occupational history of Pella in Jordan reflects these changes in the architectural, material cultural and biological assemblages through the ages.

This lecture will explore the history of Pella after Alexander, spanning nearly two thousand years of near-continuous occupation. Main horizons include early Ptolemaic outposts, concentrated settlement under the Seleucids, monumental Roman Imperial Civic remains, several Christian basilicas, extensive Umayyad period housing and a Mameluke period mosque. Discoveries made in recent seasons bearing on all these phases of occupation are illustrated, as we explore the long history of one of the Decapolis’s richest cities.

Stephen Bourke has nearly forty years field experience in the Middle East, with interests ranging from the Palaeolithic through late Medieval periods. He has directed the University of Sydney excavations at Pella in Jordan since 1992. During his many seasons of work at Pella he has had to remove between 4-5m of Classical and Late Antique period horizons to get to his beloved Bronze Age, and has, perforce, developed a nodding relationship with the history and archaeology of Pella after Alexander’s conquest.

This event is free, though booking through the Nicholson Museum is required. Contact # (02) 9351 2812.
