Academy Travel invites you to join two of Australia’s leading archaeologists, Dr Estelle Lazer and Ben Churcher, for a special lecture at The National Museum, Canberra, as they discuss their fields of expertise.
The event is for ACT residents and complies strictly with ACT and federal COVID Safe policies.
Dr Estelle Lazer is a world leading archaeologist of Pompeii – you may have seen her recently as the expert-at-hand in documentaries by the Smithsonian and the BBC. Her research on the human remains of Pompeii has changed how we understand the ancient world. Estelle will be speaking about Pompeii, and some of the fascinating discoveries that have been made there recently.
Ben Churcher is the Field Director of Sydney University’s excavations at Pella, Jordan, where he was worked for over 35 years. Ben will be speaking about the diverse and fascinating archaeology of Jordan, whose history ranges from the splendour of Nabatean Petra to Roman Jerash, Crusader castles and Islamic hunting lodges. He will also introduce you to the University of Sydney’s work at Pella, which has just notched up the milestone of 40 years of excavations.

Tickets are only available to residents of the ACT.
As this is a COVID Safe event, we have introduced special booking conditions. You will not be able to attend the event if you:
feel unwell in the days prior to the event
experience symptoms such as a fever, gastrointestinal issues, sore throat, shortness of breath or coughing in the days prior to the event
have been exposed or to someone with COVID-19 or who potentially has COVID-19 14 days or less prior to the event
are undertaking self-isolation
have if in the past 14 days visited a region in Australia that has been subsequently placed under lockdown
If you have booked a ticket and any of the above occur, do not attend the event and Academy Travel will refund your ticket.
Academy Travel reserves the right to exclude any staff member, guest or attendee who displays symptoms – including coughing, fever or shortness of breath – on arrival or during the event.
This is a social distanced event
We are following ACT guidelines precisely and working with the venue to ensure appropriate social distancing measures are in place and enforced. These measures include:
Reduced venue capacity, so that there at least 4 square metres per person
Allocated seating with a minimum of 1.5m distance between seats
Registration on arrival at the venue
Provision of approved hand sanitizer
Provision of face masks for optional use
Staged entry and exit from the venue
The use of online ticketing only – tickets must be bought online in advance
Permissive booking conditions, which allow a no questions asked refund should you feel unwell prior to the event
Exclusion of any staff member, guest or attendee who exhibits symptoms on arrival at the venue or during the event
