Join us at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney for an afternoon of informative talks, illustrated with musical examples, and a recital of songs by Robert and Clara Schumann. Each lecture is presented by one of Academy Travel’s expert tour leaders and explores the connection between music making, society and the arts in Europe during a period which saw revolution, scientific enlightenments, war and the emergence of modern nation states.
During this time composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner and Verdi explored the big social and political ideas of the time, while others looked to Europe’s rich history both to seek national identity and to escape the present. And although it was not acknowledged until much later, this was also a period in which women featured strongly in the musical scene, both on stage and off.
