TRAVEL IN CONTEXT | LIVE ON THE GROUND | LEARN FROM A LOCAL
Join us in Venice, as we go live on site in a unique collaboration between our expert tour leaders and top local guides.
Venice has long embraced innovation, and in the 15th century it became the Italian leader in the new technology of print-making. Join Dr Nick Gordon and artist Alessandra d’Agnolo as we go inside the studio of a Venetian print-maker to explore this long history. Alessandra walks us through her print-making processes and shows us her working collection of historic presses. We also take a stroll around her beautiful neighbourhood of Castello, now known worldwide as the site of Venice’s Biennale and a vibrant district for contemporary artists and artisans.
LECTURER & LOCAL GUIDE
Dr Nick Gordon has extensive experience as a cultural tour leader, having taken small group tours from Australia to Italy, the Low Countries, Germany and Scandinavia for more than ten years. He is a practising and exhibiting artist with an encyclopaedic knowledge of contemporary art, and his research on the Italian Middle Ages has won numerous academic scholarships and prizes (including a University of Sydney medal in History).
Alessandra d’Agnolo was born and bred in Venice and undertook her initial studies at the historic Accademia delle Belle Arti. She subsequently studied for a Masters at London’s prestigious Slade School, with a specialisation in print-making. Alessandra has exhibited in Europe, America and Asia, including at the Second International Art Biennale in Beijing, the Galleria Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice and the Palais Thurn und Taxis in Bregenz. She has been artist-in-residence in Seattle, Tokyo and the Duoro in Portugal, and today carries out much of her print-making and photographic work in her Castello studio, where she also houses an impressive collection of historic presses.
How it works
Each virtual tour allows for in-depth exploration of key sites. Your local guide walks you around the sites and explains, in real time, the context and significance of what you see. The visits combine live on-the-street video with background context from your Academy Travel tour leader and interpretative visuals to help you see even the finest details.
The Live on Site tour is 90 minutes in length and held on Zoom. The cost to subscribe to a Live on Site tour is $65. Online booking required – see details below. Each booking is for one screen.
Live on Site & Zoom
Our Live on Site tours will be hosted on Zoom, a free online education platform. If you don’t already have an account with Zoom, you will need to sign up at www.zoom.us. To join with video, you’ll also need a device with a camera (such as a computer, phone or tablet with a webcam). Otherwise you can join with audio only.
A confirmation of purchase will be sent to your email and once we receive your enrolment, we will send you an email with a link and password to use for Zoom to access your Live on Site tour. We’ll send basic instructions on joining a lecture session for those who are new to Zoom, and your Academy Travel lecturer will be available 15 minutes before the tour starts to help with any technical issues.
