TRAVEL IN CONTEXT | LIVE ON THE GROUND | LEARN FROM A LOCAL
Join us in Venice, as we go live on site in a new and unique collaboration between our expert tour leaders and top local guides.
Since the 11th century, Piazza San Marco has been the centre of civic life in the Most Serene Republic of Venice. Academy Travel’s Robert Veel and Venetian local guide Elisabetta Amadi take us on a walking tour of the square, as they explore the millennia of history, magnificence and cultural wealth in its monuments.
LECTURER & LOCAL GUIDE
Robert Veel has an abiding interest in the history, art and music of Italy, which he taught for many years at the University of Sydney’s Centre for Continuing Education as Assistant Director. A founding director of Academy Travel and the publisher of Limelight magazine, Robert has led small group cultural tours to Italy for 30 years and has a particular passion for Venice.
Local guide Elisabetta Amadi is Venetian through and through, born and bred here and still living in the historic centre of the city. From a line of boat builders on her father’s side, and of artists and artisans on her mother’s, Elisabetta has a very special knowledge of Venice and a deep connection to its history.
How it works
Each virtual tour allows for in-depth exploration of key sites. Your local guide walks you around the sites and explains, in real time, the context and significance of what you see. The visits combine live on-the-street video with background context from your Academy Travel tour leader and interpretative visuals to help you see even the finest details. As it’s a small group, there’s plenty of time for discussion, to ensure you get the most from each visit.
The Live on Site tour is 90 minutes in length and held on Zoom. Places are limited, like every Academy Travel tour, to a maximum of 20 screens. The cost to subscribe to a Live on Site tour is $50. Online booking required – see details below. Each booking is for one screen.
Live on Site & Zoom
Our Live on Site tours will be hosted on Zoom, a free online education platform. If you don’t already have an account with Zoom, you will need to sign up at www.zoom.us. To join with video, you’ll also need a device with a camera (such as a computer, phone or tablet with a webcam). Otherwise you can join with audio only.
A confirmation of purchase will be sent to your email and once we receive your enrolment, we will send you an email with a link and password to use for Zoom to access your Live on Site tour. We’ll send basic instructions on joining a lecture session for those who are new to Zoom, and your Academy Travel lecturer will be available 15 minutes before the tour starts to help with any technical issues.
