TRAVEL IN CONTEXT | LIVE ON THE GROUND | LEARN FROM A LOCAL
Join us in Florence, as we go live on site in a new and unique collaboration between our expert tour leaders and top local guides.
Dr Kathleen Olive and local guide Freya Middleton take us on a virtual stroll around Florence as they survey the history of Orsanmichele, a curious grain market that later became a church and one of the most important sites for Renaissance sculpture in Florence. We’ll explore works by Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello and Leonardo’s master Verrocchio in detail, with footage and commentary from Freya live in Florence, and illustrated historical context from Kathleen.
LECTURER & LOCAL GUIDE
Dr Kathleen Olive is well known to Academy Travellers as one of our most skilful tour leaders, leading our groups to Spain, France, Japan and, particularly, Italy for over 10 years. Kathleen studied 15th-century Florence for her PhD dissertation and lived in the city for a number of years.
Australian Freya Middleton has made Florence her home for 20 years, building a reputation as a top-ranked specialist tour guide. A preferred lecturer and guide of the Advancing Women Artists Foundation and for the Australia Council’s delegates to the Venice Biennale, Freya undertook a prestigious internship at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, studied for a Master of Arts (Renaissance Studies) at the University of Warwick, and has a legendary and infectious enthusiasm for all things Italian.
How it works
Each virtual tour allows for in-depth exploration of key sites. Your local guide walks you around the sites and explains, in real time, the context and significance of what you see. The visits combine live on-the-street video with background context from your Academy Travel tour leader and interpretative visuals to help you see even the finest details. As it’s a small group, there’s plenty of time for discussion, to ensure you get the most from each visit.
The Live on Site tour is 90 minutes in length and held on Zoom. Places are limited, like every Academy Travel tour, to a maximum of 20 screens. The cost to subscribe to a Live on Site tour is $50. Online booking required – see details below. Each booking is for one screen.
Live on Site & Zoom
Our Live on Site tours will be hosted on Zoom, a free online education platform. If you don’t already have an account with Zoom, you will need to sign up at www.zoom.us. To join with video, you’ll also need a device with a camera (such as a computer, phone or tablet with a webcam). Otherwise you can join with audio only.
A confirmation of purchase will be sent to your email and once we receive your enrolment, we will send you an email with a link and password to use for Zoom to access your Live on Site tour. We’ll send basic instructions on joining a lecture session for those who are new to Zoom, and your Academy Travel lecturer will be available 15 minutes before the tour starts to help with any technical issues.
