Masters of Light: Sorolla and the new Spanish art

February 15, 2020 @ 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Speaker: Elena Ortega

Academy Travel is proud to sponsor the Friends of Hazelhurst Regional Gallery’s Artz Talk 2020 program.

This February sees Academy Travel tour leader and artist Elena Ortega lecturing at the gallery.

Joaquín Sorolla was one Spain’s most famous artists at the turn of the 20th century. He was known internationally for his mastery of light – especially his ability to capture the intensity of Spanish light – his technical virtuosity and the brilliance of his canvases. Step into Spanish art at the turn of the 20th century with Elena Ortega and explore this astonishing period of change, as the naturalism originating in the Renaissance was broken through by the 20th-century avant guarde. Looking at Sorolla and his contemporaries will shed light, literally and figuratively, on this exciting and complex period in Spanish art.

Elena Ortega is a practicing painter who regularly exhibits her work. She has a Bachelor of Arts from Sydney University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Masters of Fine Arts from the National Art School. She has won numerous academic prizes for her study in art history and theory, including a prestigious scholarship to the UK.

The cost for this lecture is:

  • Friends of Hazelhurst $10
  • Non-members $15

The lecture includes drinks and nibbles, with time for a Q&A with the presenter.

Bookings can be made by phoning the gallery on 8536 5700 or at the Hazelhurst Administration Desk.
