In July 2019 the renowned Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow will be performing in Brisbane at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC theatre). Academy Travel has secured top-category seats for both performances – George Balanchine’s Jewels, and Khachaturian’s modern classic Spartacus.
Spartacus has long been considered the ‘signature’ work of the Bolshoi, and the performance is sure to thrill. Jewels is a more abstract work, with Balanchine’s choreography a contemplation on the exquisite jewellery created by Van Cleef and Arpels in the mid-20th century. It uses music from different composers and incorporates different musical and balletic styles.
Performing arts expert and Academy Traveller Dr Kate Foy is your Brisbane-based host. The tour will be managed on the ground by Paula Booth, a regular tour manager for Academy Travel – most recently Winter in Russia in January 2019.
Over the weekend, we also have the opportunity to enjoy a live interview with theatre critic and editor of Australia’s Limelight magazine, Jo Litson, speaking with Joseph Simons, a dancer, choreographer and director. Jo and Joseph will review the previous evening’s performance of Jewels, discuss the Bolshoi’s traditions, house style and artistic formation and outline what to look for in the evening’s Spartacus performance.
Academy Travel’s excursion includes two nights’ accommodation including breakfast, performance tickets and a 5-course tasting menu lunch at GoMA, with matching wines.
