Explore the fashion of Chanel at the wonderful exhibition coming to Melbourne’s NGV this summer. As corporate members of the NGV, we’ll enjoy a private, before-hours tour of the show, which brings together over 100 of Chanel’s garments in addition to her accessories and archival materials.

This new 4-day tour also includes key places for Australian art and design and has a strong focus on women’s cultural leadership, including a visit to the estate of Dame Nelly Melba, the NGV’s Bark Ladies exhibit, which showcases the art of 11 Yolngu women, and a special Heide exhibition on Cynthia Reed, who helped develop a taste in Australia for modern art and design. The tour is rounded out with fine dining and the MTC’s performance of Touching the Void.

Monday 31 January – Arrival

We meet in the hotel at 5pm this afternoon for a lecture on Chanel by Dr Anna Lebovic, after which we enjoy dinner in a fine French restaurant. (D)

Tuesday 1 February – Chanel at the NGV and Cynthia Reed at Heide

This morning we have a private before hours visit to the NGV’s Chanel exhibition, which features over 100 original garments designed by Chanel across her life and includes her innovative accessories. Afterward you can explore the NGV’s other exhibitions, including Bark Ladies, showcasing the spectacular work of 11 Yolngu artists. Our visit to the NGV concludes with a sparkling High Tea. This afternoon, we’ll visit the Heide Museum of Modern Art, the historic home of John and Sunday Reed, who nurtured the circle of artists, writers and intellectuals at the centre of Melbourne’s art world in the mid-20th century. Our visit will include a guided tour of the original Reed house and an exhibit on John’s sister Cynthia Reed, whose high-profile Spring St Gallery and Shop helped establish a taste for modernist art and design in Melbourne. After our guided visit, there is time to explore the other two gallery spaces and to enjoy the sculpture park. (B, High Tea)
