OVERVIEW
From jagged Julian peaks and glacial lakes to karst plateaux, Adriatic shores and medieval towns, Slovenia compresses an extraordinary variety of landscapes and architecture into a small country, offering artists an almost inexhaustible range of subjects.
This new 15-day tour, led by artist and tutor John Haycraft, is built around the easel, with each region offering a distinct palette of subject, colour and light. Beginning beneath the Julian Alps at Bled, we paint and sketch the glacial lakes of Bled and Bohinj and the turquoise waters of Lake Jasna before descending to the Karst plateau and the white Lipizzaner horses of Lipica. From here, we explore the caves of Postojna, the white-stone squares of Piran and the seafront gardens of Miramare.
Our final stay is in Ljubljana, with painting excursions to the alpine Logarska Valley and the great fortress of Celje. Non-painters are equally well catered for, with guided visits, walking tours and cultural encounters revealing Slovenia’s layered history and distinctive regional character.
Prerequisite: As many mornings and afternoons will be spent painting, it is preferable for travellers to have some degree of experience and skill in drawing and/or painting to take full enjoyment from this tour. Non-painters are also welcome to join and will be well-catered for.
