OVERVIEW
Across the Central North of Italy, on roads where few tourists venture, lies a string of cities, towns and villages whose history, art, architecture and fine gastronomy more than rivals that of their more frequently visited neighbours.
Exploring the hidden gems of Emilia-Romagna, Le Marche, Umbria and Tuscany, this 19-day tour begins in Bologna, famed for its medieval towers, before venturing to Città di Castello, home to elegant Renaissance palaces that line its historic centre. Our journey then continues to Urbino, where the legacy of Duke Federico da Montefeltro still resonates in its architectural treasures, before arriving in Ravenna, where dazzling mosaics reflect the city’s status as a former capital of the Western Roman Empire. Finally, our journey culminates in the town of Padua, a scholarly hub with a lively atmosphere.
Led by art historian Dr Jeni Ryde, we’ll uncover the artistic and architectural treasures of the region – from early Christian churches to grand Renaissance palaces and imposing medieval castles – and experience a slower pace of life, where local culinary traditions are shaped by distinct microclimates, and fine local wines complement a sophisticated gastronomy.
