Biography
Dr Lauren Richardson is a lecturer in international relations specialising in Japan and the Korean peninsula. She majored in Asian Studies and went on to complete a Master's in Asian Studies at Monash, a Master of Political Science at Keio University in Tokyo, and a PhD in International Relations at the Australian National University.
Lauren began her academic career as a lecturer at Keio University before teaching Northeast Asian relations at the University of Edinburgh for three years. She now teaches diplomatic studies with a focus on Northeast Asia at the Australian National University.
Lauren has held visiting fellowships at the Japan Institute of International Affairs, Keio University and the Australian War College. She is a recipient of the Prime Minister's Australia-Asia Award (2011) and has participated in the US-Korea NextGen Scholars Program (2015–16) and the German Marshall Fund's Young Strategist Forum (2019). She currently serves on the Australian Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (AUS-CSCAP), is a Board Member of the ANU Korea Institute and the ANU Japan Institute, and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of East Asian Affairs and East Asia Forum.
Lauren is an active public commentator on the politics and society of Japan and the two Koreas. She also regularly delivers executive education on Japan and South Korea to public servants in Canberra, and pre-departure briefings to politicians and diplomats travelling to the region.
