OVERVIEW
Poet, philosopher and designer William Morris decried the aesthetic changes and decline in quality which the industrial revolution had brought to English decorative arts by the mid-19th century. He sought instead to revive what he considered the high standards of workmanship of the bygone Medieval age, becoming a champion of the Arts and Crafts Movement, renowned for his beautiful, intricate designs.
In 1861 he set up what was to eventually become Morris & Co, producing wallpapers, soft furnishings, stained glass and furniture for an enthusiastic clientele at home and abroad. In Adelaide, the Barr Smith family became one of Morris & Co’s most devoted international clients, furnishing their homes with his designs for nearly 50 years.
Led by Morris scholar and former Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Christopher Menz, this five-day tour explores the enduring legacy of Morris & Co. The program concludes with a visit to AGSA’s landmark international exhibition Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition, offering a vivid counterpoint to Morris’s vision of art.
