OVERVIEW
Central Asia spans a vast landscape through which the Silk Road connected East and West for over two millennia. Along these routes, goods, ideas and belief systems moved between cultures, shaping a region defined by exchange, adaptation and continuity, the legacy of which remains visible today in its cities, landscapes and material traditions.
Over 28 days and in the company of Central Asia specialist Chris Aslan, this spectacular journey traces these historical routes across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Beginning in Almaty, the journey follows long-established corridors of movement through the mountain landscapes of the Tien Shan and around Lake Issyk-Kul, before descending into the fertile Fergana Valley and continuing west to the great Silk Road centres of Samarkand and Bukhara.
Crossing into Turkmenistan, we then explore the ancient cities of Merv and Nisa before returning to Uzbekistan via Konye Urgench and the former Aral Sea basin to Khiva, concluding in the capital of Tashkent. Throughout, lectures and workshops connect the people, places and histories encountered.

Chris Aslan’s
Carpet Workshop
FEATURED EXPERIENCE
Reviving UNESCO Silk Road Traditions
In Khiva, we visit the remarkable Silk Carpet Workshop associated with our Tour Leader Chris Aslan, whose memoir ‘A Carpet Ride to Khiva’ recounts his seven years living in
the city and helping revive its traditional silk-carpet craft.
Established in 2001 as a joint initiative between UNESCO and Operation Mercy, the workshop was created to restore skills that had declined during the Soviet period and to provide meaningful local employment, especially for women and people with disabilities.
Because few early Timurid carpets survive, Aslan and the workshop’s founders looked to 15th-century illuminated manuscripts, historic tilework and carved wooden doors
for the workshop’s design inspiration. The result is a distinctive Khivan style, drawing on geometric patterns, interlaced stars and stylised floral forms associated with Central Asia’s Timurid artistic heritage.
Today, the workshop continues as a centre of living craft. More than 40 women work at carpet looms, while nearby artisans produce suzanis, the richly embroidered textiles long associated with Uzbek domestic and ceremonial life. A visit here offers more than a demonstration – it reveals the full chain of production, from natural dyeing to the slow, precise work of knotting silk thread at upright looms.
