overview

For eight centuries, Venice flourished as a powerful City State, its strength rooted in maritime trade and the wealth it generated.

The Republic’s success depended on a complex network of systems designed to manage and sustain economic growth. Central to this were the diverse guilds, which upheld standards, regulated quality and ensured commonly accepted weights and measures essential for commerce. These institutions created stability and trust, enabling Venice to dominate Mediterranean trade and compete with rival powers.

Join Dr Eireann Marshall & Commodore Vince Di Pietro in conversation as they explore how these guilds and trade networks underpinned Venice’s rise as a maritime powerhouse.
