overview

Today, New York stands as one of the world’s leading opera centres, hosting the Metropolitan Opera, which is among the largest and most prestigious companies on the global stage.

Yet, for over a century, the city was seen as an operatic backwater, struggling to attract Europe’s cultural elite. Its eventual rise was characterised by fierce rivalries and moments of high drama – a journey reflecting the cultural currents shaping this celebrated art form. Through decades of challenge, opera has endured as a cornerstone of New York society, continually evolving while maintaining its grandeur.

Join Dr Matthew Laing for a fascinating exploration of how New York transformed from an overlooked stage into a global operatic powerhouse.
