overview

In 1977, archaeologist Manolis Andronikos began excavating the Great Tumulus, the largest burial mound at ancient Aigai, Macedonia’s royal seat.

Among the discoveries was Tomb II, a two-chambered burial left largely undisturbed. Inside lay a wealth of treasures, now housed in the museum within the tumulus itself. Yet it is the human remains that have stirred the greatest intrigue. Could this be the final resting place of Philip II, Alexander the Great’s father, and which of his seven wives lies beside him? Beyond its occupants, the tomb’s contents testify to the wealth, artistry and authority of Macedonia’s rulers.

Join Dr John Tidmarsh to explore the Royal Tombs, highlighting their exceptional finds and the unresolved debates that continue to animate historical and archaeological research.
