Hidden behind the towering Himalayas, Tibet has long fascinated the outside world – a land of legend, spirituality and mystery.
For centuries, Mongol and Chinese powers vied for dominance, while Tibet’s Buddhist theocracy leveraged their presence to sustain its authority. From pre-Buddhist origins to absorption into the newly formed Chinese nation in 1949, Tibet’s history is one of resilience and transformation – raising questions about what remains of the “old Tibet” today, both within and beyond its borders.
