Two titans of British landscape painting, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable transformed the genre – their visions as unalike as fire and water.
Turner sought the sublime in fiery skies and dramatic flair, while Constable found beauty in the familiar English countryside. Though both admired the Dutch masters, their divergent approaches ignited a famed rivalry. Now, as Tate Britain marks their 250th anniversaries with a landmark exhibition, their enduring opposition invites us to reflect on the power of contrast in shaping artistic legacy.
Join Anne Harbers as she delves into the lives of Turner and Constable – a story of rivalry, vision and the power of landscape to stir the soul – echoing the themes brought vividly to life in the exhibition itself.
YOUR EXPERT LECTURER
Anne Harbers is an experienced presenter and writer on Art History and Decorative Arts. After taking degrees in Chemistry and enjoying a career in medical research and international business, Anne followed her heart and obtained an MA degree from the University of Sydney. A long-time enthusiast for 18th century European decorative arts and English literature, she is currently undertaking art history research projects relating to British and European subjects.
