overview
Two titans of British landscape painting, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable transformed the genre – their visions, unalike as fire and water.
Turner, with his fiery skies and dramatic flair, sought to elevate landscape to the sublime. Constable, by contrast, found beauty in the familiar, capturing the English countryside with quiet devotion and detail. Though both admired the Dutch masters, their approaches diverged sharply, igniting a celebrated rivalry that captivated the art world of their time. As Tate Britain marks their 250th anniversaries with a landmark exhibition, we ask: what lies at the heart of their artistic opposition — and why does it still resonate today?
Join Anne Harbers for a vivid journey into the lives and legacies of Turner and Constable – a tale of genius, rivalry and the power of landscape to stir the soul.
