OVERVIEW
Located more than 1,400 kilometres from the Australian mainland, Norfolk Island occupies a unique position in the history of European colonisation in the Pacific. First charted by Captain James Cook in 1774, the Island became home to two successive penal settlements before the British government resettled the descendants of the Bounty mutineers here in 1856.
This eight-day tour examines this remote territory through three pivotal chapters: Cook’s initial survey and the failed first settlement, the brutal convict era that earned Norfolk its reputation as a place of secondary punishment, and the arrival of the Pitcairn Islanders whose legacy shapes the Island’s culture today. In the company of colonial and military historian Brad Manera, we explore the UNESCO World-Heritage listed Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area through detailed walking tours and contextual talks.
Beyond its convict past, our tour includes visits to coastal landscapes, historic houses and museums, offering insight into the Island’s unique flora, fauna and the cultural heritage of Norfolk Island’s proud community.
