One of Australia’s leading literary figures, Peter is an award-winning poet, memoirist and novelist.

 

Biography

Peter Rose is an award-winning author, arts critic and former publisher. He has been leading Academy Travel cultural tours in Europe, the United States and Australia since 2016. His own travels in Europe began in 1974. Widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading poets and arts critics, he has particular expertise in literature and opera.

Peter has published a dozen books of his own: poetry, novels and memoir. He was won or been shortlisted for most of Australia’s major literary awards. His family memoir, Rose Boys, won the National Biography Award and is considered a classic of Australian life writing. Throughout the 1990s he was a publisher at Oxford University Press. From 2001 to 2025 he was Editor and CEO of Australian Book Review. Among his many initiatives at the magazine was the creation of ABR Arts, for which Peter has written extensively about the core opera repertoire – especially Richard Wagner.
