OVERVIEW

Vienna is a city of palaces and gardens, museums and music, tradition and modernity. For more than 400 years it was the jewel in the glittering imperial crown of the Habsburgs.

The city’s wealth, at its zenith, is illustrated in its magnificent architecture, extraordinary collections of fine and decorative art, and a musical legacy that included some of the greatest names in classical music. As the Habsburg Empire waned, the city found new energy, embracing modernity in the revolutionary art and architecture of the Secessionists,
the municipal socialism of Red Vienna and Sigmund Freud’s work in psychoanalysis.

Our 13-day residential tour, in the company of art historian Christopher Menz, explores the city in depth, following in the footsteps of Mozart and Beethoven, Otto Wagner and Gustav Klimt, and ventures into the surrounding countryside as we cruise along the mighty Danube through the beautiful Wachau Valley. Of course, in this city of music, our tour includes premium seats to six selected performances across Vienna’s leading concert halls and opera houses.

  • Day 1 | Tuesday 11 May
    Arrival

Vienna stands among Europe’s foremost cultural capitals, where centuries of imperial patronage fostered remarkable achievements in music, architecture and the visual arts. Gathering at our hotel overlooking the leafy Stadtpark, we meet for introductions before setting out on an afternoon orientation walk – an ideal introduction to the city shaped by centuries of Habsburg rule. The walk concludes at Restaurant Huth, where we enjoy a welcome dinner showcasing traditional Viennese cuisine. Overnight Vienna (D)

  • Day 2 | Wednesday 12 May
    Habsburg Vienna | Musikverein

From the late Middle Ages until the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, the Habsburgs ruled from Vienna, transforming the city into the administrative, ceremonial and cultural heart of their vast domains. Following an introductory talk in the hotel, we set out on a guided walk to explore this magnificent legacy the Habsburgs bequeathed the city, including majestic St Stephen’s Cathedral with its colourful tiled roof, and the Imperial Treasury, whose extraordinary collection features the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire and other coronation regalia. Lunch is then enjoyed at a traditional Viennese restaurant before our afternoon concludes at the magnificent State Hall of the Austrian National Library, one of Europe’s finest Baroque library interiors. In the evening, we kick off our performance program in the sumptuous Golden Hall of the Musikverein, where the Wiener Symphoniker, conducted by Petr Popelka and joined by acclaimed Austrian cellist Kian Soltani, performs Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major alongside Korngold’s Symphony in F-sharp. Overnight Vienna (B, L)

  • Day 3 | Thursday 13 May
    Karlskirche and Klosterneuburg

The reign of Emperor Charles VI marked one of the great building campaigns of Baroque Vienna, producing monuments that reflected both dynastic ambition and religious devotion. Among the finest is the Karlskirche, commissioned following the plague of 1713 and widely regarded as one of the city’s architectural masterpieces. Our morning begins with a visit to the Karlskirche before continuing to the nearby Wien Museum, whose collections trace Vienna’s development from its Roman origins to the present day. A light lunch is also enjoyed in the museum café before we travel to Klosterneuburg Abbey, founded in the 12th-century by Margrave Leopold III. Overlooking the Danube, the abbey became an important Habsburg residence and our guided tour here takes us through the sumptuous imperial apartments and the Chapel of Saint Leopold, where we see the Verdun Altar – a technical masterpiece regarded as one of the most important artworks of the Middle Ages. We return to Vienna in the late afternoon, with the evening at leisure. Overnight Vienna (B, L)

  • Day 4 | Friday 14 May
    Kunsthistorisches Museum

Centuries of Habsburg patronage produced one of Europe’s greatest collections of paintings, sculpture, antiquities and decorative arts. Opened in 1891, the Kunsthistorisches Museum was designed to present these imperial treasures within a monumental Renaissance Revival building created expressly for their display. The building itself is a masterpiece of 19th-century museum architecture, crowned by a magnificent staircase adorned with paintings by Gustav Klimt. Today, its thoughtfully redisplayed galleries showcase exceptional works by Bruegel, Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, Velázquez and Vermeer alongside one of Europe’s finest collections of decorative arts. After a talk in our hotel this morning, we tour the extensive collections, followed by lunch in the museum’s excellent café. The afternoon is then at leisure to continue exploring the museum at your own pace or you may wish to explore the nearby Albertina – a former Habsburg palace now renowned for its exceptional collections of prints, drawings and paintings by artists including Monet, Picasso and Klimt. We gather again in our hotel in the early evening for an intimate private talk by a guest violinist. Overnight Vienna (B, L)

  • Day 5 | Saturday 15 May
    Central Cemetery & Heiligenstadt

Few cities honour their musical heritage as profoundly as Vienna. Its composers are commemorated not only in concert halls and museums, but also in the places where they lived, worked and were laid to rest. Today’s visits trace this legacy, beginning at the Central Cemetery, where generations of composers, conductors and musicians are remembered, including Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Johann Strauss II and Schoenberg. We then continue to Heiligenstadt to visit the Beethoven Museum, housed in the village where the composer sought respite as his hearing deteriorated and where he wrote the poignant Heiligenstadt Testament. Lunch follows at the historic Pfarrwirt, one of Vienna’s oldest restaurants, before we visit the Waschsalon Museum, located within the Karl-Marx-Hof housing complex, to explore the ambitious social reforms that defined the era of Red Vienna. We return to our hotel in the late afternoon by metro, with the evening at leisure. Overnight Vienna (B, L)

  • Day 6 | Sunday 16 May
Music at the Hofburg | Vienna State Opera
For more than five centuries, the Hofburg echoed with the music of the Habsburg court. Established by Emperor Maximilian I in 1498, the Hofmusikkapelle continues this remarkable tradition through its performances in the Hofburgkapelle, the former Imperial Court Chapel. We begin the day here, attending Mass sung by the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the Hofmusikkapelle, preserving this musical legacy that has endured for more than 500 years. Afterwards, we pause at a traditional Viennese coffee house for coffee and cake before visiting the Collection of Historic Musical Instruments in the Neue Burg. Among its exceptional holdings are Renaissance and Baroque instruments, Viennese fortepianos and string instruments by Jacob Stainer. The afternoon is then at leisure before we make our way to the Vienna State Opera for Wagner’s sublime comedy, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. This acclaimed production by Keith Warner stars the outstanding baritone Michael Volle as Hans Sachs, alongside Eric Cutler, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller and Michael Nagy, under the baton of Axel Kober. Overnight Vienna (B, Morning Tea)

  • Day 7 | Monday 17 May
    The Upper Belvedere | Musikverein
Built as the magnificent summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Upper Belvedere later became home to the imperial collections and today houses one of Austria’s most important art museums. Its galleries present a comprehensive survey of Austrian painting, from medieval religious art and Baroque masterpieces to the radical innovations of the Vienna Secession, including Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss. After exploring the palace, galleries and formal Baroque gardens this morning, we return to the Musikverein in the afternoon for a matinee performance by the Staatskapelle Berlin under the direction of Christian Thielemann. Joined by acclaimed Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund, the orchestra performs a richly Romantic program featuring two of Liszt’s great symphonic poems framing Richard Strauss’s Three Hymns after Poems by Friedrich Hölderlin. Overnight Vienna (B)

  • Day 8 | Tuesday 18 May
    Schönbrunn Palace | Musikverein

For more than two centuries, Schönbrunn served as the principal summer residence of the Habsburg court, witnessing imperial ceremonies, diplomatic receptions and the daily life of one of Europe’s most influential dynasties. Expanded under Empress Maria Theresa in the 18th-century, it became the magnificent Baroque palace we see today and our guided visit here includes the Bergl Rooms, a beautifully frescoed suite allowing direct access to the garden in the warm summer months. Following free time for lunch, you may choose to explore the extensive formal gardens and the hilltop Gloriette, or join our local guide for a visit to the Wagenburg, home to the Habsburgs’ remarkable collection of imperial carriages, sleighs and ceremonial coaches. This evening sees us again return to the Musikverein for a recital by the internationally acclaimed pianist Yuja Wang, one of the defining virtuosos of her generation and renowned for her electrifying stage presence. Overnight Vienna (B)

  • Day 9 | Wednesday 19 May
    Jugendstil Vienna

By the late 19th century, a new generation of Viennese artists and architects sought to break with the artistic conventions of the Habsburg establishment. Led by figures such as Gustav Klimt, Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann, the Vienna Secession championed a new artistic language that became known as Jugendstil. Our guided walk this morning explores the buildings and ideas that shaped this influential movement, including Otto Wagner’s Stadtbahn Pavilions, before we visit the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), whose outstanding collections chart the evolution of Viennese design, from the Vienna Secession and Wiener Werkstätte to the birth of modernism. Following time at leisure for lunch, we then travel to Otto Wagner’s Kirche am Steinhof, commissioned as part of the Steinhof Psychiatric Hospital and regarded as one of the defining masterpieces of European Art Nouveau. Returning to the city, we conclude the day at the Secession Building to view Gustav Klimt’s monumental Beethoven Frieze, created in 1902 as a visual interpretation of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and one of the movement’s most celebrated works. Overnight Vienna (B)

  • Day 10 | Thursday 20 May
The Vienna Woods | Vienna State Opera
Beyond Vienna’s grand palaces and ceremonial avenues lies the Vienna Woods, a landscape that for centuries offered the Habsburg court respite from the demands of imperial life. Its forests, spa towns and monasteries became places of recreation, reflection and retreat, attracting emperors, composers and artists seeking both inspiration and escape from the capital. Our excursion today begins in the elegant spa town of Baden, long favoured by the imperial family and Viennese society for its thermal springs. We then travel through the picturesque Helenental to Mayerling, the former imperial hunting lodge forever associated with the tragic deaths of Crown Prince Rudolf and Mary Vetsera in 1889. After a break for lunch, we continue to Heiligenkreuz Abbey, founded in 1133 and the oldest continuously occupied Cistercian monastery in the world. Our guided visit explores its beautifully preserved medieval cloisters and Gothic chapter house before returning to Vienna. Tonight sees us return to the Vienna State Opera for Alban Berg’s Lulu. Built around Berg’s sophisticated use of Arnold Schoenberg’s revolutionary twelve-tone method, the work combines psychological intensity with extraordinary orchestral colour. Internationally acclaimed Australian conductor Simone Young leads this landmark production by Willy Decker, with Ilia Staple in the title role. Overnight Vienna (B)

  • Day 11 | Friday 21 May
    Wachau Valley | Konzerthaus

West of Vienna, the Wachau Valley has long served as a gateway between Central Europe and the Habsburg capital. Its fertile river terraces, medieval towns and celebrated vineyards have shaped trade, settlement and wine production along the Danube for centuries, earning the region UNESCO World-Heritage status. Travelling by coach to Krems this morning, we board a boat for a leisurely Danube cruise through the heart of the Wachau to the picturesque wine village of Spitz. Lunch is enjoyed at a local restaurant on arrival, accompanied by a tasting of regional wines, before returning to Vienna by coach. Tonight, the final performance of our tour takes us to the intimate Mozart Hall of the Konzerthaus, where the internationally acclaimed Quatuor Mosaïques performs masterpieces by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Performing on period instruments, the ensemble is celebrated for its historically informed interpretations and has long been regarded as one of the world’s leading string quartets. Overnight Vienna (B, L)

  • Day 12 | Saturday 22 May
    Musikverein & Leopold Museum

Founded in 1812, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde has played a central role in Vienna’s musical life for more than two centuries, fostering performance, education and scholarship. Its purpose-built home, the Musikverein, opened in 1870 and has since become one of the world’s most celebrated concert venues, renowned for both its remarkable acoustics and its architectural splendour. Having experienced three performances here during the tour, we return this morning for a guided visit, exploring the history of the building beyond the concert stage. Our guided tour takes us through the rehearsal rooms, before we view the Golden Hall and more intimate Brahms Hall. Following coffee at the historic Café Schwarzenberg, we continue to the Leopold Museum, whose striking limestone-clad building by Ortner & Ortner provides a fitting home for the remarkable collection assembled by Rudolf Leopold. Best known for its unrivalled holdings of Egon Schiele, the museum also displays masterpieces by Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka and Richard Gerstl, alongside outstanding collections of Wiener Werkstätte furniture, decorative arts and design.
