tour overview
Lying between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, the narrow peninsula of Southern Italy has always been an attractive proposition for visitors. Early Greek settlement along the coast was so extensive it became known as Magna Graecia before the dominating influence of the Roman Empire spread south, while from the Middle Ages onwards the region saw successive waves of invasion and occupation from the Byzantine to the Aragonese.
Introducing us to the rich, multilayered history and spectacular scenery of Southern Italy, archaeologist Dr Estelle Lazer takes us on a 17-day adventure though Campania and Calabria. Beginning in the vibrant city of Naples and the fascinating ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, we continue down the coast, visiting the archaeological remnants of the great cities of Magna Graecia and exploring the Byzantine churches, Norman fortresses and Angevin castles which remain, before heading through the hinterland to Reggio Calabria in Italy’s “toe”.
As we travel, we’ll traverse a landscape of rugged mountains, sprawling beaches and dramatic cliffs, while enjoying outstanding archaeology, art and architecture together with a culture that reflects the rich and varied heritage of the region.
