overview

Arguably the most controversial pharaoh of ancient Egypt, Akhenaten challenged tradition through sweeping changes in religion and art.

Ruling during the 14th century BCE, he introduced a monotheistic faith and transformed royal iconography with unprecedented artistic forms. Akhenaten’s depictions – marked by elongated features, soft curves and androgynous forms – have sparked debate over whether they reflect his true appearance or serve as symbolic expressions of his spiritual vision. From ancient reactions to modern scholarship, his image has been endlessly reinterpreted and mythologised.

Join Lucia Gahlin for a compelling exploration of one of history’s most unusual pharaohs, and the myths that have shaped – and reshaped – his legacy over millennia.
