overview

Known as the 'Greek Pompeii', the unique archaeological site of Akrotiri on the magnificent Greek isle of Santorini was devastated by a cataclysmic volcanic eruption over three thousand years ago.

Since its discovery by Spiros Marinatos near the modern Greek village of Akrotiri in 1967, about ten thousand square metres of houses and streets have been brought to light – including huge storage vessels, delicately painted pottery and a series of spectacular frescoes. Whilst the ancient inhabitants all appear to have fled before the eruption, taking their valuables with them – who were these people, and what can we deduce about their society?

Join historian Dr Brian Brennan for a look at an extraordinary site and its fascinating people, who appeared to have had a fleet with which they traded widely in the eastern Mediterranean, their remarkable culture profoundly shaped by Minoan Crete.
