overview
The Spanish baroque painter Velázquez is undoubtedly one of the greatest painters in Western art.
Born in Seville in 1599, Velázquez's prodigious artistic talent quickly caught the attention of a young King Philip IV of Spain. As court painter, Velázquez would immortalise the Spanish court from top to bottom, from the royal family down to the court dwarves – all of whom he portrayed with a warm humanity.
Join art historian Dr Sophie Oosterwijk for a close look at the life and stunning work of a great artist, whose portraits, religious works and genre scenes are all notable for their touching compassion.
