overview
Nestled among the Alps and lakes, Switzerland boasts some of Europe’s most refined and remarkable art collections – shaped not by royalty, but by civic pride and passion.
Unlike the collections of Europe’s princely courts, Swiss museums reflect a unique tradition of citizen patronage, giving rise to institutions like the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Rosengart Collection in Lucerne and the Beyeler Foundation, whose holdings span Renaissance masterpieces to postwar modernism. This model of civic engagement has been instrumental in shaping Switzerland’s cultural landscape, illustrating how private initiative can foster public heritage and influence the course of art history.
Join Tom Abbott for a revealing look at Switzerland’s most exceptional collections – and the citizens whose passion for art helped define a nation’s cultural heritage.
