Beyond its forbidding mountain borders, Tibetan culture and politics have long shaped the neighbouring Himalayan kingdoms of Bhutan, Sikkim and Ladakh.
Forged through religious schisms, imperial rivalries and shifting allegiances between India and China, these Himalayan realms have preserved the sacred core of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism – even as Tibet itself was transformed under Chinese rule after 1959. Today, Bhutan, Sikkim and Ladakh offer a living reflection of the Tibet that once was – resilient, sacred and complex. How can their histories inform our understanding of a culture that, despite changes in its homeland, continues to survive through living traditions and influence beyond its borders?
