overview

Known as the author of The Jungle Book, Rudyard Kipling was more than just a prolific writer – he was the product of a richly artistic world.

Born in India to a family steeped in creativity, Kipling grew up surrounded by art and design. His father, John Lockwood Kipling, was an artist, teacher and curator, serving as Professor of Architectural Sculpture at the Sir JJ School of Art in Bombay. On his mother’s side, the artistic legacy continued: her sisters married two of the foremost Pre-Raphaelite painters – Edward Burne-Jones and Edward Poynter. This artistic heritage profoundly shaped Kipling’s storytelling, enriching it with visual detail, a reverence for nature, and a fascination with mythology and symbolism.

Join Anne Harbers to explore how art and imagination converged in Kipling’s work, producing narratives that continue to captivate and endure.
