overview
Set against the backdrop of Napoleonic Europe, Tosca is a searing political thriller and one of Puccini’s most powerful operas.
Created at the turn of the 20th century by Giacomo Puccini and his accomplished librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, Tosca explores themes of love, power & betrayal – brought vividly to life through its unforgettable score. Set in Rome during a time of upheaval, this opera pits the forces of political freedom against authoritarian repression. Central to the drama are fugitive Angelotti, idealistic painter Cavaradossi and brutal police chief Scarpia, whose cruelty threatens both the life and love of passionate actress Floria Tosca.
Join musician and broadcaster Sandy Burnett for an illustrated journey through this poignant opera – revealing its rich historical layers and the emotional arc that carries it to a tragic climax.
