tour overview
From the western coast of central Anatolia to the Greek islands in the Aegean, walk in the footsteps of philosophers and poets on our new 16-day tour through ancient Ionia – once a significant crossroad of empires, home to some of antiquity’s most renowned cities.
We begin our tour in Istanbul, the capital of empires, whose history is intertwined with Ionia, followed by Izmir, an ancient Ionian port whose archaeological sites remain a testament to the region’s rich cultural tapestry. Our journey continues to Greece and the islands of Chios and Samos, with visits to ancient settlements pivotal to Ionia’s narrative, alongside picturesque medieval villages that allow us to experience the essence of Mediterranean island life. Returning to the mainland, our stay in the coastal town of Kuşadası is perfect to visit the stunning archaeological site of Ephesus, the jewel of the Ionian region, and the ancient Greek sanctuary of Didyma.
Led by Assoc Prof. Lesley Beaumont, this tour delves into the Ionian region across Turkey’s breathtaking landscapes and enchanting Greek islands.
