overview

Born in London in 1843, Gertrude Jekyll would go on to become the dominant horticultural figure of her generation - with an impressive legacy that endures to this day.

Growing up in the Surrey countryside, Jekyll was an accomplished artist and craftswoman, until failing eyesight in her forties forced her to redirect her artistic skills entirely to the garden.

Serendipitously, it was at this time that Jekyll met the up-and-coming architect Edwin Lutyens - who was also about to embark on an extraordinary career in which he would transform the Edwardian country- house landscape. Over 400 gardens have been attributed to Jekyll, of which a little over 100 were designed in collaboration with Lutyens’s architecture - the most famous of which was Jekyll's own house at Munstead Wood.

Join garden historian Mike Turner for a thrilling exploration of a leading proponent of the Arts & Crafts movement, whom Vita Sackville-West once described as ‘that grand gardener to whom we owe so much’.
