tour overview
A place where East met West, the Aegean coast of Türkiye and nearby Greek islands – known as Ionia – was one of antiquity’s most vibrant regions. Its cities, sanctuaries and islands fostered remarkable achievements in architecture, philosophy and urban life.
This new 16-day journey tracing this ancient Ionian world is led by archaeologist and Assoc. Prof. Lesley Beaumont. We begin in Istanbul, the great imperial capital at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, before travelling south to Izmir and the ancient city of Smyrna, gateway to the Ionian coast. From Çeşme, we sail to the Greek islands of Chios and Samos, where sacred sanctuaries, medieval villages and links to figures such as Homer and Pythagoras reveal the region’s layered past. Returning to Türkiye, we base ourselves in Kuşadası to explore the extraordinary ruins of ancient Ionian cities including Ephesus, Priene, Miletus and Didyma.
Concluding in Istanbul, this expert-led tour offers privileged access to key sites and deep insight into Ionia’s legacy and the interconnected cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world.
