overview
Widely considered one of the most important novels in modern Italian literature, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's literary masterpiece provides fascinating insights into aristocratic Sicilian life at a moment of incredible upheaval during the 1860s.
Hailing from a noble family himself, Lampedusa's exploration of the painful process by which Sicily was integrated into the newly formed Kingdom of Italy - and its aristocracy subsequently struggled to survive - was a critical and commercial success when it was posthumously published in 1958.
Join Dr Eireann Marshall for a brilliant lecture which places The Leopard in its fascinating cultural and historical contexts, and includes an examination of the lives of nineteenth century Siclian elites such as the Whittakers, who would go on to make their fortune through the Marsala trade.
