tour overview
An innovative and refreshing view of the Renaissance, the role of sea trade in its survival, and relevance to our present.
The Renaissance in Italy was made a reality through generous patronage that fostered brilliance in art, architecture and scientific innovation. There were many backgrounds, families and professions from where patronage flowed, and influential and powerful patrons embraced and adapted to generate increasing wealth to ensure their commercial and political survival.
Through history, one source of wealth often overlooked is that generated by trade from the sea. The demand for sustainable development, knowledge and research underpinned continuous reliance on trade from the sea in precious commodities and the dissemination of ideas. Whether through enlightened or darkened times, Italy’s continuation of the Renaissance brilliance welcomed in the 20th century with a new burst of creativity.
This new 17-day tour, in the company of both Commodore Vince Di Pietro and Dr Eireann Marshall, begins in the Maritime Republic of Venice, whose influence spanned over 800 years. The tour then takes us to the university city of Padua; Modena and its glamorous automotive history; Florence to experience the art, architecture and fashionable product of Renaissance patronage; and finally Milan, one of the most important city states of the Renaissance.

Your EXPERT TOUR LEADERS
Led by both Commodore Vince Di Pietro, AM, CSC, RAN (Retired) and Dr Eireann Marshall, we will learn about trade, the sea and its unending relevance to society through the ages and to the present. Our tour explores the palaces, cathedrals, gardens and museums that exemplify the history
of each city and its connection to trade and, where relevant, the sea – often with special access to sites and collections.
History comes to life, complemented by an exploration of contemporary achievements in automobile design and production, in fashion and in architecture where names such as Renzo Piano, Ferrari, Armani, Maserati and Prada have left a lasting legacy.
Vince is an independent consultant. Vince draws upon 40 years of service in the Royal Australian Navy specialising in aviation, flight training, professional military education, international diplomacy, risk management, certification, and safety.
